Today's recommended reading features an op-ed by Richard Nelson and Samson Masebinu, PhD from our partner Power Africa, discussing the importance of energy supply and demand balance in sub-Saharan Africa. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gD28wydRThe disparity in electricity availability across sub-Saharan Africa is stark, with some nations like Ghana and Uganda producing far more electricity than they consume, while others such as Burkina Faso and the Democratic Republic of the Congo face significant shortages. Efficient interconnected electricity infrastructure and robust cross-border trade are critical for sustainable and economic development of the continent's energy sector.Countries with surplus electricity face economic challenges as generation companies often pass the high production costs onto governments. This not only strains national budgets but also highlights the necessity for effective energy management and comprehensive policy reforms. Over the past decade, efforts have been made to enhance trade opportunities through power pools and regulatory agencies, which are crucial for advancing infrastructure improvements. Such reforms aim to create a well-connected energy market that reduces costs and bolsters energy security across the continent.A key initiative addressing this issue is our collaboration with Power Africa, where the International Energy Agency (IEA), together with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has developed an innovative tool capable of estimating current and future electricity demand growth for every single building in a country. This model utilizes artificial intelligence and satellite imagery to forecast energy needs with notable accuracy, revolutionizing how planners, utilities, and off-grid companies target resources and plan expansions. For more insights into our energy demand estimation tools and methodologies, and to explore potential collaborations: https://lnkd.in/g-z6SiQR

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has recently released a comprehensive report, "Climate Resilience for Energy Security in Southeast Asia"The increasing impact of climate change is putting energy security at risk in Southeast Asia. The region faces challenges from heatwaves, floods, droughts, tropical cyclones, and sea level rises. These climate hazards affect every aspect of the energy system, from fuel extraction to electricity distribution. High temperatures impair solar PV and natural gas-fired power plants, while heavy rainfall and flooding disrupt coal and mineral mining operations. Intensified tropical cyclones endanger coastal energy infrastructure. Our report provides a thorough overview of these climate hazards and their impacts on the energy sector until the end of the 21st century. It also outlines effective measures to enhance climate resilience in Southeast Asia, paving the way for a secure and resilient energy future.Key findings include:- Rising land surface temperatures by 0.8°C since the 1980s.- Increasing flood risks and altered precipitation patterns.- Intensified tropical cyclones, especially in Myanmar, the Philippines, and Viet Nam.- Strains on the power sector, particularly solar PV and gas-fired power plants.- Disruptions to coal and critical mineral mining operations.- The need for climate resilience in hydropower, especially in Laos PDR and Viet Nam.- Threats to energy infrastructure from intensified tropical cyclones and sea level rise.- Building a climate-resilient energy system requires a robust climate database, scientific assessments, and integrating climate resilience into energy policies. Mobilizing private sector investment, supportive policies, and innovative solutions are essential steps.Access the full report here:

💡🏡 The International Energy Agency (IEA) recently released a report titled Strategies for Affordable and Fair Clean Energy Transitions. My key takeaways and favorite pieces of analysis are highlighted below:1) Energy represents a large part of annual consumer spending. On average, consumer spending on energy has been more than USD 1,000 per capita for the past decade. Oil (around 50%) and electricity (around 35%) currently account for 85% of consumer spending on energy. Oil price volatility significantly impacts consumer energy expenditure. The importance of electricity in consumer spending on energy is rising: electricity’s share of total final energy consumption has almost doubled over the last four decades. Industry and transport each account for around a third of total energy expenditure, with the final third going to meet energy needs in buildings, including heating, cooking, lighting, and using appliances.2) In advanced economies, energy poverty concerns are on the rise following the energy crisis in 2022 and the subsequent squeeze on the cost of living. The poorest 10% of households spend up to 22% of their disposable income on residential energy and transport fuels, even though they consume only about half as much of these fuels as the richest 10%. Some households face stark choices between heating their homes and meeting other basic necessities. In emerging market and developing economies, the disparities between income groups are even wider, with the poorest consuming one-fourth that of the richest. Households in EMDE in lower income brackets spend less of their disposable income on energy than higher-income households because they often lack access to electricity and clean cooking options.3) The global energy crisis led governments worldwide to enact short-term energy affordability support policies to help households and corporate consumers manage higher energy prices. By the end of April 2023, IEA tracking put these expenditures at some USD 900 billion in direct grants, vouchers, tax reductions, and price regulations. Two-thirds of the affordability measures put in place were not targeted. Untargeted support is easy to administer and can be implemented quickly, which was crucial given the scale and speed of the shock.4) The Nigeria experience, shows us how:(a) government policies can be highly effective in supporting the growth of mini-grid construction and creating a favorable environment for such projects(b) mini-grids often result in cheaper power for the end user. (c) it is normal for many projects to rely on grant funding in the initial phase, but this, together with concessional finance, should be used to demonstrate the bankability of off-grid projects and attract private capital. Otherwise, it is impossible for them to grow at scale and play a key role in achieving SDG7 by 2030.Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/g9S-eDtM

🌍💡 Who is investing in energy around the world, and who is financing it? The latest commentary by the International Energy Agency (IEA) dives deep into the current landscape of energy investments and financing, highlighting critical trends from 2015 to 2023. Key takeaways:( ) The capital structure of energy investments shows that debt and equity financing play different roles across regions and sectors. Clean energy investments heavily rely on debt, while fossil fuel sectors utilize more equity.( ) In Africa, the share of debt spending is particularly significant due to the higher share of equity financing and a greater share of fossil fuels in the energy mix. This region, along with others like the Middle East and Eurasia, exhibits a higher reliance on equity.( ) Investments in clean energy are growing, yet fossil fuel sectors continue to dominate. This is evident in regions such as Africa, where fossil fuel investments still hold a considerable share.( ) Household investments in clean technologies have doubled since 2015, supported by government incentives. In Africa, government and state-owned enterprises play a significant role in driving energy investments, underscoring the importance of public finance in this region.( ) Commercial finance leads the way globally, but in Africa, public finance and development finance institutions are crucial in mobilizing investments. These institutions play an essential role in reducing the cost of capital and bringing in larger volumes of private capital, especially for clean energy projects.Read the commentary: https://lnkd.in/gbKbsm3KRead the Clean Energy Investment for Development in Africa report: https://lnkd.in/gxcjpJuw
