Philip Edmondson, Jr. and his family moved from Halifax County, Virginia, to Bedford County where Philip is assumed to have died. His sister Susan, b. about 1806, in Halifax, married Thomas Terry, son of Daniel Terry and Dorothy Ransom Terry. She died Oct. 24, 1832, in Bedford County. He died in Caddo Parish, Louisiana, about 1850-60.He is shown in the 1830 Bedford County census and in the 1850 Louisiana census in Caddo Parish: Thomas Terry, 50, planter, born in Virginia, with Mary E., 35, wife, b. in SC, William H., 23, Joseph W., Mary B., 19, Harriet O., 13, Thomas J., 10, James J., 6. Laura R., 4, Courtney, 1.Only Courtney, a boy, was born in Lousiana. The older three were born in Tennessee and would be children of Susan Edmondson and Thomas Terry.The family lived in Alabama from 1837 to 1846 after Thomas’ marriagae to his second wife, Mary.Children of Susan and Thomas: Elizabeth Angelina Terry, b. Aug. 11, 1823, in Tennesseeand died Nov. 12, 1922, Limestone County, Texas; William H.C. Terry, b. about 1827, Bedford County, and died in 1885 in Freestone County, Texas; Joseph W. Nov. 2, 1832.The National Banner and Nashville Whig carried notice ofthe death of Mrs. Susan Terry, age 26 years, wife of Mr. Thomas Terry, in Bedford County. (OBITUARIES FROM EARLY TENNESSEE NEWSPAPERS, p. 364, editedby the Rev. Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr.). Her stone is in the Edmonson Cemetery, near Singleton, Bedford County: Susan Edmonson, wife of Thomas Terry,died Oct. 24, 1832, aged 26 years. (No birthdate given).

July 14, 1842.Thetombstone of James W. Edmonson, born this date, and died June 3, 1875, is in the Edmonson Cemetery near Singleton, Bedford County.There are several fieldstone markers with no inscriptions. The only other marked grave is that of Susan Edmonson Terry.

1853, August.Wiley Daniel was administrator of the estate of Richard W. Edmondson, deceased.Joseph Hastings, A.C. Wood and J.W. Proby are named to lay off support for the widow and family of Richard W. Edmondson.

(Is this correct? Other sources say they married in Knox County). He is said to be a son of Benjamin Edmondson who was born in VA.They moved to Missouri by 1819 as their son William B. (Julius Edmondson was son of William Frederick Edmondson and Celia Hicklin, according to Jayne Sullivan, Bakersfield CA, in a letter to EFAB, #50.Frederick’s will was probated in Lafayette County, Missouri, Feb. 4, 1828.Dated Dec. 15, 1827. Julius Edmondson married America Parker March 25, 1845.He died in 1854 in Missouri, had two daughters Martha and Mary who died young and a son Frederick who was born in 1849).

1823.August.Will of Benjamin Edmondson, Will Book 1, p. 44, Blount County.Sons: Sterling and Parker.Daughter: Barbery. Parker received the land where Benjamin lived. Barbery appears to be still at home as Benjamin asks Parker in the will to find her a home and reasonable support as long as she is unmarried. Two horses and all other stock, household and kitchen furniture and all other property to be sold by the executors and equally divided by the children now alive share and share alike.Sterling and Parker were Executors. R.W. Long, Samuel Thompson, R. McClub and Mary G. Gillespie witnessed.Long and Thompson proved the will
The land in the will had been conveyed to Benjamin by John Vikers in 1816, 76 acres.(Abstract of will provided by Charlotte Sage, April, 2000).

Edmondson, born in Washington County VA about 1852, is listed in the 1860 Census of Claiborne County and in the 1880 Census is married to Virginia, 22, with sons: Andrew J. and Thomas J., both age 2.(EFAB, No. 74.Dr. Howard Jones).

William Edmiston/Edmondson of Washington County, Virginia, and his first wife, Margaret Montgomery.

Sept. 18, 1821. Will of Thomas Edmondson written.Probated Nov. 17, 1824. He disposed of much land and 15 slaves, naming each as designated to his wife, Martha, to his sons Samuel and John Black Edmondson, and to his daughters Elizabeth, Martha, Esther, Rachel and Louisa. He did not mention his son William who might have died already but provided: “and whereas I have a lawsuit depending in the Circuit Court in Bedford County for a certain tract of land situated in Lincoln County; now in case I should be successful in the termination of said suit, I give and bequeath one hundred acres of said tract to each of my grandchildren, Hugh McClung and Obadiah, sons of my son William Edmondson”.This seem to indicate William had died.

Thomas Edmondson was born in Augusta County, Virginia, July 25, 1759, son of William Edmiston and Agnes Holmes. One source says he lived in Washington County, Virginia, during the Revolution, and in the Cumberland Settlement. He enlisted in Campbell’s Regiment, Washington County, Virginia, in1780, and served under Campbell in the Battle of Kings Mountain as a private.He returned in late 1780 or 1781 to the Cumberland Settlement.Hesigned the Compact of Government,dated May, 1780.He married April 22, 1782, Martha Buchanan, daughter of Robert Buchanan and Mary Buchanan.Martha was born Sept. 19, 1763, and died September 16, 1835.Issue of Thomas and Martha:

He and Elizabeth Edmondson had a daughter, Mary, who married _______Kercheval and was an heir when James died.A son, James Mosby Edmondson, Jr., was born Nov. 15, 1817, and died in Columbia, TN, Oct. 15, 1841.His grave is in Rose Hill Cemetery.He married Angeline O’Reilly in Maury County in 1837.

Dec. 27, 1851. James Edmondson died in Davidson County.He was buried in Old City Cemetery.The inventory of his estate showed in 1853 two negroes, Carter and Lucy, in possession of Mrs. Fanny B. Edmondson. He died intestate. The estate settlement mentioned his daughter, Mary Kercheval, a granddaughter Frances Edmondson by a son who had died, and a son Thomas Edmondson whodied in November, 1852.

JAMES EDMONDSON (1763-1851)
James Edmondson was born in Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia, son of Thomas and Mary Edmondson, natives of Essex County, Virginia. His mother died in Frederick, after which his father married Ann Campbell in 1786 and moved in 1792-93 to Pendleton District, SC. James moved to Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia, about1796where he owned a tavern and other property, some of which he sold to his brother John of Charles City County, Virginia, in 1797. At that time he was married to Elizabeth Gregory, daughter of Captain Gregory, who was born in Hanover County, Virginia. Wulfeck gave a brief biography of James, quoted by Dr. Howard V. Jones in EFAB, No. 72.“Born Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia, 1763. Died in Nashville, Tennessee, Dec. 27, 1851. Buried in Old City Cemetery. Married Elizabeth Gregory, daughter of Capt. Gregory of the Revolutionary War. She was born in Hanover County, Virginia, March 25, 1768, and died in Nashville, Tennessee, July 10/11, 1849.Buried in Old City Cemetery. “Garrett and McClain in OLD CITY CEMETERY, p. 32, say both James Edmondson and his son Thomas were born in Winchester, Virginia.

It is possible James moved to Pendleton District, SC, in the late 1790’s as three James Edmondsons are listed in the Census there in that year. One was shown in the 1810 Census.However, there is no evidence to suggest that he remained there.

It is likely James Edmondson moved to Kentucky for a few years before he settled in Maury County and Davidson County, Tennessee, before 1820. The Census of Maury County that year lists 1 male over 45, 2 males 16-26, 1 male 16-18, 3 males under 10, 1 female over 45, 2 females 16-26, 1 female under 10.
Some of these people might have been his sons, their wives and children, or guests in his hotel.

June 27, 1827.Correspondence of Andrew Jackson.Carter Beverly wrote to Jackson that he wrote a letter to James Edmondson of Nashville two days ago.He was living in Davidson County in 1830. The census lists 1 male born 1760-1770, 2 males born 1790-1800, 1 male born 1800-1810, 1 male born 1810-15, 2 males born 1815-1820, 2 males born 1820-25, 1 male born 1825-1830, 1 female born 1760-1770, 1 female born 1790-1800, 1 female born 1820-25, 2 females born 1825-1830.

He advertised in the Nashville Republican and Gazette, Jan. 6, 1831: The City Hotel has been rebuilt.James Edmondson.

He bought two lots from Pleasant Nelson in the town of Columbia, for $12,000.Deeds W, p. 475.

He sold a negro slave, Isaac, to William and JosephRankin, April 16, 1840. Maury County Deeds X, p. 258.

He operated the Columbia Inn, Maury County.The Columbia Observer advertised Nov. 19, 1840: Columbia Inn, J. Edmondson, Prop. (Maury County Newspapers, 1810-44, by Jill K. Garrett).

James Edmiston of the City of Nashvilledeeded two slaves, Aaron and Lucy, to his son Thomas, June 13, 1851, for $1. 00 and love and affection.Also, a house and lot situated in the town of Columbia in Maury County, now used as a hotel known as the Columbia House, leased and occupied by William Wood, and the furniture in the Columbia House.Deed Book 14, p. 594.This was shortly before his death.

His wife Eliza V. Edmondson died before he did. An inventory of her estate, Aug. 13, 1851, mentioned a second hand piano not sold March 1, 1850, by her administrator Josiah Fleming. (Wills and Inventories Book 15, p. 29).Davidson County Wills, Book 16, p. 56, gives the settlement of the estate of Eliza V. Edmondson.

The Inventory of the estate of James Edmiston, decd., was recorded July, 1852, by Robert Campbell, his administrator. The list of chattels and property included hotel property in Columbia, Maury County, rented out for the year. All property had been disposed of by deed of gift to Thomas Edmondson, June 7, 1850, Book 14, p. 594, Davidson County, and in Maury County, conveying two negroes, house and lot in Columbia,and all furniture.A list of bad notes was given. (Davidson County Wills and Inventories, Book 15, pp. 435-37).

From the foregoing it would seem James had only 3 children who either survived him, or who had children who survived him. These are:

He diedin Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee, March 27, 1851, according to Garrett & McClain or in Nashville, April 28, 1852, from Old City Cemetery Record. Buried in Old City Cemetery.He was intestate.Wife Fanny b. in 1795 in Pennsylvania. All children were born in Tennessee.

James Edmondson would seem to be James Moseby Edmondson, Sr. Other references to Mosebys might suggest his mother Mary was a Moseby. We have no proof of her family name.His father was associated in Kentucky with a Mosby.

Thomas is probably the Lt. Thomas Edmondson in Capt. Stockton’s Company, 28th Regiment, U.S. Infantry, in the War of 1812.There was a Thomas Edmondson in Capt. Belt’s Company, 4th Regiment, Kentucky Militia, War of 1812, for whom Land Warrant # 403 for 80 acres was issued Sept.28, 1850, for service in the War of 1812.This would indicate Thomas as well as his father James lived in Kentucky before moving to Tennessee.

May 8, 1834.A suit was filed in Chancery in Gibson County by William Edmundson and Hance McWhorter against David Crockett and wife, Abram Burgin and wife, Peter Trosper and wife, James Edmundson and wife, and George, William and Sally Patton.Minute Book A, page 1, Chancery Court, 1834-1837.This suit stemmed from the will of RobertPatton of Gibson County who willedto his seven children, First: to George Patton, Sally Edmundson (Edmiston), Ann McWhorter, Elizabeth Crockett,Matilda Hooper, Margert Burgin, and Rebecca Edmundson and the heirs of their bodies ”allof property that I have heretofore given them.Second: to daughter Sally Edmuston ten dollars and no more.Third: to my daughter Ann McWhorter ten dollars and no more.I then want my property to be sold as soon as possible and then to be equally divided between my son George Patton and my daughters Elizabeth Crockett, Matilda Hooper, Margert Burgin, Rebecca Edmundson, and the heirs of my son James, except my daughter Rebecca Edmundson must pay one hundred and eighty dollars to be equally divided among said legatees. I appoint David Crockett and George Patton executors of my will this the year 1832.

(William Edmundson and his wife Sally Patton lived in NorthCarolina.They and Hance and Ann McWhorter were not told of the probate of the will until after it happened .Robert Patton was 96 years old and not of sound mind. Elizabeth Crockettand Matilda Hooper were present when old Mr. Patton made his will and were alleged to have improperly influenced him to exclude some of his heirs. David Crockett and the others lost the suit and were required to make restitution.After this, David Crockett left Tennessee and went to Texas where the ex-Congressman fought in the Alamo.Most historians have thought he died with the other defenders and none survived butpapers of a captain in Santa Ana’s army were published in which he stated Crockett and five others were captured and executed.Doubleday’s Encyclopedia gives this same account.Crockett had many enemies but his Congressional statements seem to reflect an honorable man.)

John Smith Edmundson came to TN in 1839 from SC.He was born Jan. 19, 1782, and died in 1854.(His parents were Isaac and Margaret Edmundson and his grandparents were Caleb and Esther Underhill Edmundson who moved to SC from PA.Caleb was born in Ireland in 1712, son of William and Elizabeth Edmundson who died in London Grove, Chester County,PA.William was son of Samuel Edmundson who was a merchant and shipowner in Dublin and died about 1719.This Samuel Edmundson had another son, Samuel, who engaged in the rum trade in Barbados, who had a son William who married in Barbados.Their son, another Samuel, married in 1778, and died April 21, 1780, in a shipwreck .Samuel who died about 1719was son of William Edmundson, born in 1627 in Little Musgrove, Westmoreland, and his wife Margaret Staniford of Chester.This William was the famous Irish Quaker preacher, son of John, d. 1635, and Grace Edmundson. John was a son of Thomas and Agnes Edmundson).

Anderson, Isaac Edmundson, Margaret Edmundson Waters, wife of David M. Waters, and all the grandchildren, share and share alike, except Cary Gilbert and Rebecca Adams who would receive only $100 each.To Eleanor,his wife, the following slaves: Henry and his wife Pati and their children, Alleck, Frederick, John, Franky, Lewis, Sanson and Sam and his wife Rainey.At her death, the slaves would be sold to masters of their choice and the proceeds to be divided as the land was.He left to Mary Ann Anderson, his stepdaughter, a negro girl, Harriet.To his grandson, John E. Gilbert, 220 acres of land, and negroes, Ailsey, little Sam and Mary.To grandson Cary Gilbert my negro man Moses.To granddaughter Rebecca Adams, my negro Easter and her son Dave. Eleanor Duncan Edmundson died in 1834 or 1835.Johnmarried Susan Turner in 1836.She died that year.His third wife was Eleanor Cooper, widow of Henry Cooper of Newberry District, SC.Her daughter Mary Ann Cooper married James K. Anderson.(See EFAB, No. 77).

John Edmundson grew up in NewberryCounty, S.C.He was apprenticed as a boy to Robert Evans who invented the screw auger andlater took over the business. Edmundson augurs were famous.He sold the business and moved to Giles County, Tennessee.He live on a plantation in Newberry which was laterowned by N.B. Davenport.In business with him was Joseph Smith, for whom Edmundson named a son.One son, Isaac, stayed on in SC for a few years, then moved on to Tennessee near his father and later moved to Texas. (See Annals of Newberry SC by James B. O’Neall and John A. Chapman, 1892).

He was buried on the place which Squire Joseph Smith Edmundson owned, the house still standing in 1983.His tombstone inscription:
“To the memory of John Edmundson born Jan. 19, 1982, in Union District, South Carolina.Moved thence while young to New Berry District where he lived beloved, respected by all till the fall of 1839 when he immigrated here and continued an exemplary and useful life till the morning of 17th Jan. 1854 whe he suddenly died, with a firm hope of a glorious resurrection and blessed immortality”.

April 4, 1791.The Deep River Preparatory Meeting was informed that Anthony Harrart, Solomon Edmondson and Benjamin Iddings had moved into the verge of the Westfield Monthly Meeting with their families .Edward Bond, Barnabus Coffin and John Howell were appointed to make inquiry.
Sept. 17, 1791.A certificate was handed to the Westfield M.M. from the Deep River M.M. for Susannah Edmundson and her children: Mary, Margaret, Susannah and John, dated the 2nd day of the 5th month, 1791, and accepted.

Alex McCorkle vs. Peter Wright and Jane his wife, Rachel J., Andrew J., Robert L., Thomas F., Marie L, Leander, James, William F. and George Titus, Ebenezer Fazer, Julius Fazier and wife.The Court orders the suit to be advertised in newpapers in Nashville, in some newspapers in Huntsville, Alabama, and St. Louis, Missouri, for three weeks commanding said defendants to appear in Henry County Court, the 4th Monday in October next. The said defendents were residents of Alabama and Missouri and could not be served.
The bill states that the defendants as representatives of Robert Edmondson, deceased, were entitled to a certain land warrant, # 1575, dated Sept. 22, 1820, for 590 acres of land and that James Titus, Rebecca Edmondson, Isabella Edmondson, and George Titus on the 5th day of Dec., 1820, sold the warrant to Rep. D. Childress for a valuable consideration.Childress sold the same to complainant and afterwards the defendants obtained a grant for said 590 acres and the complainant prays the legal title be invested in him.

1836.John Harvey Edmiston, a minister, “taught a female school” in Paris, Henry County, TN.He married Martha Jane Smith, daughter of Charles Allison Smith.John was born about 1815.They had:Charles Edmiston, b. in TN in 1840. March 31, 1801. Court Case, No. 1348. James McDonald and Alexander Simrall vs. John Edmondson. A capias and respondendum was issued commanding the Sheriffof Knox County to take the body of John Edmondson to answerJames McDonald and Alexander Simmral of a plea of debt of $85.75 to which he answered he owedthem. He admits debt and is ordered to pay.

Oct. 10, 1807. Solomon Edmondson bought 93 acres in Knox County on the south side of Beaver Creek, and the north side of Beaver Ridge. The same day he bought another 150 acres adjoining the first tract. Witnessed by Samuel Edmondson. Vol. IN, p. 237.
Jan. 7, 1808.John Edmondson bought 50 acres on the north side of Beaver Creek Ridge joiningWilliam and Samuel Low.

1808.Solomon Edmondson and his son Samuel moved to the Beaver Creek area northwest of Knoxville.They had lived in northeastern Tennessee, Greene County,near Rheatown where they had 200 acres each on Sinking Creek which they sold in 1806 and 1807.John Grayson lived near Beaver Creek and three of his daughters married Edmondsons.Beaver Creek and Beaver Ridge are in a 10 mile long valley running northeasterly from the Clinch River.

Quaker Meetings in this area of Tennessee were as follows:
Newberry M.M. in Blount County (renamed Friendsville MM in 1875) was established by authority of NewhopeM.M. and Lost Creek M.M., 14th day of the 5th month, 1808. Lost Creek M.M. on 24th day of 1st month, 1801, granted Friends of the Lower Settlement the privilege of holding meetings. The Quarterly Meeting at a session in 1804 directed that a Preparative Meeting be established to be called Newberry.Lost Creek MM was located in Jefferson County.

June 25, 1808. Certificate was received by Lost Creek Monthly Meeting for John and Thomas Edmondson and endorsed to Newberry Monthly Meeting.

July 27, 1816.Sterling Edmondson, on the Tax Rolls of Mecklenberg County, VA in 1810, married Rebecca Taylor, his first wife.Rebecca is said by family tradition to have died in 1827 after the birth of Martin Luther Edmondson. Sterling’s first name might have been William. (A letter from Clarice Edmondson Cooper in EFAB # 37, 1977, stated: William Sterling Edmonson was born in 1794 in England and emigrated to Halifax, Nova Scotia, as a small boy and to the United States probably during the War of 1812, settled in Georgia. His first wife, Rebecca Schneider Taylor, was a German girl who came to this country about 12 years of age. Family settled in Georgia. William Sterling and Rebecca had three sons: Hiram (Harvey), Camburn and Martin Luther Edmonson.William Sterling’s second wife’s name is unknown.There were three sons from this second marriage: Jack, Joe, and Sam Edmonson.Jack and Joe were inducted into the army in the Civil War in Arkansas.Sam died in the 1860’s in the State Hospital in Little Rock. Her statements have not been confirmed and seem to contradict other records as to Sterling’s birth).See Carroll County, AR to which the family moved about 1850. Sterling Edmondson was living in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, in 1810, and was the son of Benjamin Edmundson and brother of Parker Edmondson.See Blount County, TN.Sterling’s thirdson, Martin Luther Edmondson, married Martha Adeline Roberts.Their son, Benjamin Harvey Edmondson, was living in Harrison, AR, in 1883.

August 13, 1816.John Edmondson married Sarah Grayson, whose older sister had married his uncle, another John Edmondson, in 1809. John and Sarah moved to Clay County, Indiana, about 1840.

Feb. 6, 1818.Samuel Edmonson bought 10 acres, part in Knox and part in Anderson counties, joining Edmondson and Jones.This was originally a part of the Stockley Donaldson grant to James King which extended from the Holston River near the mouth of Turkey Creek to the mouth of Hickory Creek on the Clinch, up the Clinch to the mouth of Beaver Creek, Bull Run Creek and Little Dismal, and thence back to the Holston River, about 5000 acres.

William’s parents wereSamuel EdmondsonandElizabeth Johnson.Samuel wasborn near Cambridge, Maryland, and New Castle, Delaware.William’sgrandfather was Solomon Edmondson, b. in Dorchester County, MD.The family moved to Guilford County, NC, and then to eastern TN, living near Rheatown from 1790-1807 before moving to the Ballcamp area about 10 miles northwest of Knoxville.William was born about the time of this move.The family lived on Beaver Creek and Beaver Ridge.The Holt family lived on Copper Ridge on the other side of Beaver Creek.In 1812, part of Solomon’s property was given to John Edmondson, a younger son than Samuel.John was born November 16, 1786.He married Nancy Grayson September 19, 1808, in Knox County and died Feb. 28, 1856, in Indiana.When Solomon died, he left the rest of his property to his youngest son Thomas Edmondson, who married Nancy Box.Solomon is probably buried in the Yarnell Cemetery, near Beaver Creek, near the Graysons.In 1825, all three brothers owned property on Beaver Creek. In 1827, John and Thomas Edmondson moved to Indiana.John had a son, Wily Manson Edmondson, who married Sarah Ann Parrott, b. in 1827, and lived in Davies County, IN, and Lawrence County, IL, where she died in 1876.

John settled in Martin County and Thomas north of Indianapolis. It was at this time that Samuel Edmondson married his second wife, Rebecca White. The ceremony was performed Jan. 8, 1827, by Samuel’s friend, Mordecai Yarnell.Samuel was visiting in Indiana at the time of the 1850 Census.He died about 1860.
Children of Samuel and Elizabeth Johnson Edmondson:
1.William Edmondson, who married Delilah Holt. Moved to Clay County, IN and then to Vigo County, east of Blackhawk. He died at 55 in 1862, apparently in TN to which he might have gone to settle his father’s affairs.His burial place is not known.Delilah died in 1894.They had several sons, the oldest of whom was Samuel Austin Edmonson who might have kept the original homestead in Clay County.Other sons werePeter Allen Edmonson (died in Osage County, Kansas, March 22, 1894), William Strange Edmondson ( living in Kansas in the 1870’s and died Nov. 10, 1882) and Joel Holt Edmondson (who died young).Columbus Lafayette Edmonson and John T. A.Edmonson were his two younger sons who inherited his farm property after his death in 1862.Descendants, the Cottons, owned this property in 1999.William had at least three daughters.See EFAB, No. 49 and No. 127.
2.Solomon Edmondson married Lavina ___ and moved toTipton County, Indiana with his brother Francis about 1835to live near theiruncle, Thomas Edmondson, north of Indianapolis.
3.Thomas Jefferson Edmondson.Moved to Alabama and then to Carrol County, Arkansas.
4.Samuel Edmondson, Jr., a Baptist minister, married Rebecca Hicks.Moved to Rogersville, Limestone County, Alabama, west ofAthens. Some descendants moved to AR.
5.Isaac Edmondson married Anne Wheeler.Moved to Rogersville, Limestone County,Alabama, west of Athens, and to Cass County, MO, about 1839.Isaac moved often.His descendants moved to Arkansas.
6.Elizabeth Edmondson marriedJohnLetsinger and remained in Knox County.
7.Susannah Edmondsonmarried PhilipLetsinger, brother of her sister’s husband.Moved to Tipton County,Indiana, and on to Hamilton County in 1839.
8.John Edmondson married Sarah Grayson.Moved to area of Jasonville, Clay County,Indiana, about 1840.
9.Francis Edmondsonmarried Jane Grayson, sister of Nancy and Sarah. Moved toMorgan County,Indiana, in December, 1829, near Mooresville.He moved to Liberty Township, Hendricks County, about 1831.He had one son, Benjamin Grayson Edmondson; two daughters.Elizabeth Jane married a Little.Benjamin spelled his name Edmonson.

Thomas Edmondson, born about 1785 in North Carolina, marriedNancy Box, born about 1802-03 in NC.(Thomas’s ancestral line: John Edmondson, in Maryland in 1655, who married Sarah Morgan Parker and had about 1673, William Edmondson in Maryland.William married Sarah Sharp and both died in 1702 in Maryland.Their son, John, was born 9-1-1699 (Quaker dating?) and married Mary Neal 7-3-1730.Their son Solomon, born 7-26-1744, married Susannah (last name not known), parents of Thomas).
Thomas was disowned by the Quakers in 1721 for marrying out of unity.They had at least nine children (see 1850 Census, Indiana):

Thomas Edmondson was a carpenter.He died in Indiana and was buried in the graveyard of a small church about ¼ mile from Mattsville, White County, IN.(Information on Thomas and his family was provided by a descendant, the Rev. Wayne Carr Olmstead, of St. Edmunds’s Episcopal Church, Elm Grove, Wisconsin, to EFAB, No. 75)

Census of 1830.Sterling Edmondson.Census shows 4 sons.The family moved to Carroll County AR about 1850 where the census of 1860 showed his second wife, Elizabeth, by whom he had John, Samuel and Joseph Edmondson.He is not shown in the 1860 census for some reason but did not die until 1864.His grave is in the New Hope Cemetery in Starkville, Boone County, Arkansas.
His son Martin Luther Edmondson, b. Jan. 26, 1827, married Martha Adeline Roberts. He died May 5, 1870.She was born Feb. 12, 1832, and died Jan. 20, 1921. They are buried in the New Hope Cemetery, Starkville, Boone County. Their fourth child was Benjamin Harvey Edmondson, b. July 12, 1856, who married Artensey Emeline Lokey who was born May 8, 1865. Benjamin died October 29, 1933.She diedAugust 24, 1939.Benjamin Harvey Edmondson and his wife are buried in White Oak Cemetery, Harrison, Arkansas.They had eighteen children many of whom stayed in Boone County.Ada Edmonson Sansingwas living at 94, and her sister Eunice Edmonson Clark at 88, in 1977.
Ada died at 104.

July 6, 1830.Thomas Brevard died in Knox County.His Bible showed his birth, Jan. 23, 1773.The Bible listed the marriage of Zebulon Brevard, b. in 1769, in N.C., and Isabelle Edmiston.Ann Brevard, b. Jan. 6, 1766, married David Edmiston.These Brevards were probably children of Zebulon Brevard who was a neighbor of Moses Edmiston and James Edmiston inBurke County, NC.David Edmiston was probably a son of Edmiston whose estate was divided among Moses, John, David, James, George and Samuel Edmiston, and Mary Ann and her husband John Dickson.Land was sold in 1804 to S. Enliner.James, David and Moses were living in TN in 1804 and moved about 1820 to Arkansas from Nashville, TN.(See Clark and Hampstead counties, Arkansas).

1837. Samuel Edmondson Jr. sold most of his land on the north side of Beaver Creek and moved to Rodgersville, Limestone County, AL, near Athens.

Jan. 30, 1828.Deed of property in Lawrence County from James Edmundson to Robert Robson.James was the husband of Rebecca Patton Edmundson.He was named in a suit by his brother William against James, David Crockett and Abner Burgin in 1835.James Edmundson, Crockett and Burgin moved westward to Gibson County TN by 1833, as did Michael Edmundson.

July 14, 1830.In Sevier County, AR, John Edmondson, minor son of James Edmondson, asked the court to name James Burke his guardian,John’s father was deceased. John had minor siblings: William, Nancy, Elizabeth.The children were born in TN.Eizabeth Edmondson was apparently their mother.James Burke died in 1834.William Wyatt and John Edmondson were securities for his guardianship.John Edmondson lived in Sevier County, AR, in 1850, and in Polk County, AR, in 1860, and had at least three children: Sarah, b. in 1844. Thomas Edmiston/Edmondson was an early settler of Davidson County, TN, near Nashville.His son William Edmiston/Edmondson was born in Virginia or in Tennessee, Nov. 29, 1783.William’s mother was Martha Buchanan Edmondson. William was reared in Davidson County where he signed a bond Feb. 15, 1810, for $1250 for his marriage to Elizabeth Benge.His uncle Robert Edmondson and a kinsman named William Black stood surety.William and his new bride, “Bess”, settled on some of his father’s land in Lincoln County near the Elk River and Cane Creek.Four children were born there:
1.Hugh McClung Edmondson
2.Obediah Benge Edmondson
3.Mary Holmes Edmondson
4.Sarah Edmondson.

William died in the 1820’s, the last documentary evidence of him datedJanuary, 1822.His father died August 2, 1824, leaving some Lincoln County land to his minor grandsons Hugh and Obadiah but making no mention of William in his will.This property was administered by William Blount Benge, their uncle, who was married to William Edmondson’s sister Agnes (Nancy).
Bess Benge Edmondson continued to live at Cane Creek near her Buchanan,d Edmondson, Lewis and Martin relatives.Her sons were often away.She wrote letters to Obadiahdescribing events in her life.She died about 1844, possibly as late as 1850.(See: HERITAGE OF LINCOLN COUNTY TENNESSEE).

General William Campbell Edmiston married Feb. 11, 1810, in Bristol, Tennessee,Elizabeth (Betsy) Stewart, daughter of John or James Stewart and Rosannah Beatty.She was born Oct. 16, 1791, in Washington County, VA, on the site of Emory and Henry College.Her father was a noted teacher from Scotland.Shedied in Lincoln County, May 6, 1839. GWC Edmistonwas named for General William Campbell and wasnot a general himself.Born in Washington County, VA, Nov. 18, 1785,son of Col William Edmiston and his second wife Elizabeth Kennedy, he was deeded land by his father April 28, 1809 on the same date his siblings received land. They were: Samuel, Robert, Thomas, William, Jr., Margaret Harrell, Esther Kennedy, Mary McCann (McEwen), Patsy Gillespie, Elizabeth Edmiston, Sally Edmiston, Catey Moffet Edmiston.
GWC and Elizabeth Edmiston came to Lincoln County about 1817 to claim land near Howell granted to his grandfather for services as an officer in the Revolution.GWC’ssecond wife wasSally Dobbins, Nov. 1842.All of his children are of the first marriage:

He established thre Presbyterian churches in Birmingham, Alabama, and was a pastor in Fayetteville, TN, and Belfast, Gadsden and Selma, Alabama.They had one child, Minnie Watson who married Walker Greer.

9.Josephine L. Edmiston, b. Aug. 21, 1832.Married Sam A. Slaughter, Aug. 9, 1854, Lincoln County. Their daughter, Maud Slaughter, married Jobe Going of Birmingham, Alabama.
10.Thomas H. Edmiston, b. Aug. 27, 1835, and died young, unmarried.

GWC Edmiston was a Captain in the Lincoln County Militia in 1829. He donated land from his farm for the Unity Presbyterian Church and Cemetery where he was an elder and where he and his wife, Elizabeth Stewart Edmiston, were buried.

1814.Robert Edgbert Edmondson was born in Lincoln County.He married Sophia Blackmore in Lincoln County in 1838. Their daughter Catherine Ann Edmondson, married Abraham Milliken.These Edmondsons moved to the area of Abilene, Texas, around 1900.

1827.Deeds G-1, p. 515.Alexander Cowan sold land on the Flint River to John Edmiston.Witnesses were David Edmiston and James Edmiston. When the deed was recorded, David had died.James Edmondson, John Edmondson, Jr., and Alexander Edmiston testified that David Edmiston, now deceased, had witnessed the deed.John Edmiston was a Revolutionary soldier from S.C.He moved on to Jackson County, Alabama, before 1830.
David Edmiston was also from S.C., born about 1755, son of David Edmiston and Jane Miller Edmiston who lived in Augusta County,Virginia, until they moved to NC where the elderDavid died about 1766.The widow obtained a grant in S.C. to which she moved with her five children.There she married John Sansom and had five more children before Sansom was killed in 1780 in the Revolution.
The five Edmiston children, grandchildren of David “Turk” Edmiston of Augusta County, VA, were:
1.David Edmiston (“the Third”), b. by 1755 who died in Lincoln County. He married Margaret H. Logan, said to be a cousin in a Sansom letter quoted by Dr. Howard Jones.He served in the Revolution and went with his brothers first to Blount County, TN.One known son was James who married his cousin, Jane M. Edmiston.
2.Alexander who was living in Lincoln County in 1827 and apparently single.
3.Ann who married David Prestley.
4.John,born Feb. 13, 1761/62, who died in Fulton County, Illinois, in 1847.He married Elizabeth Robinson in Washington County, VA,said also to be a cousin in the Sansom letter. He was a Revolutionary veteran and has an extensive pension file.He lived briefly after the war in NC, then in BlountCounty, TN, then in Jackson County, AL, and finally in Fulton Co., Ill.He had two known sons, John, b. about 1800 and William, b. about 1809.

5. James, born in NC, Feb. 13, 1765. Died in Edgar County, Illinois, Feb. 7,
1752.He married Nancy Keown and had nine known children.

A major reason some families moved far south to the backcountry of SCand NCwas the British policy forbidding settlement west of the headwaters of rivers flowing to the Atlantic in the 1760’s.When this was lifted, settlers resumed westward migration.Two other sons of David “Turk” Edmiston, William and Moses Edmiston, and possibly John, moved to the same area of SC where Jane Miller Edmiston/Sansom settled.Alexander and Rachel Logan sold land in Augusta County, VA, in 1763.A man by this name lived near the Edmistons in SC.William and Moses might have moved back to Virginia, toWashington County, as William Edmiston Sr. arrived there in 1775 and Moses Edmistonin 1778.However, another Moses Edmiston, in Burke County, NC, might be David “Turk” Edmiston’s son.

1825. Joseph A. Edmondson was born about 1825 in Lincoln County, TN, according to the 1850 Census of Edgar County, Illinois, was living in Edgar Countyin 1850 with his parents, James R. Edmonson, 48, farmer, born in Abbeville District, SC, and Nancy, 44,born in Blount County, TN.Other children of Joseph and Nancy were: Eliza, 21, Sarah, 19, Joel, 17, all born in Lincoln County; Mary A., 14, Nancy, 12, born in Partman, Indiana; Henry C., 10, Emily, 8, born in Owens, Indiana; Adaline, 4, born in Vigo, Indiana.

John Edmiston, Revolutionary soldier from Abbeville District, S.C., moved to Lincoln County from Blount County, TN, and lived in Lincoln for 16 years before moving on to Jackson County, AL, according to his pension application in 1833. He was shown in the 1830 Census of Jackson County. (See EFAB, No. 121, p. 4).
His application said he wasborn Feb. 13, 1761/62 in Rockbridge County, Virginia.He moved from Jackson County, Alabama, to Randolph County, Illinois, where he died in late February, 1850.He named in his will his sons: Abner, John and Robert; sons-in-law Sylvester Curtis and Daniel McIntyre; daughters Rhoda and Susan.Wife Jane and “their children”:Margaret, MaryAnn and Jane.

1834. Samuel D. Edmonson, b. in Pendleton District SC about 1808, is reported to have lived in Lincoln County when his daughter Elizabeth J. was born about 1834. Another daughter, Mary A.G., was born there about 1835.The family moved to Putnam County where Eliza A. was born about 1837, James H., about 1839, and Sarah H. about 1842. They moved on to Owen County, Indiana, whre Martha was born about 1844 and Adaline about 1847.They moved on to Edgar County, Illinois, where Ellen was born in 1850. July 25, 1834.An article in the “Randolph Recorder”, Randolph, Tipton County, Tennessee, 16 miles west of Covington:
“Deaths by Lightning.The Fayetteville Tennessee Yeoman gives an account of the deaths of Thomas, son of William Edmonston, Esq., of that county (Lincoln) and three slaves, by lightning.They were in a barn garnering wheat when struck, which was struck by the fluid and entirely consumed. “.

Edmiston, 19,is listed in the 1850 Census of Edgar County, Illinois, which says he was born in Lincoln County, TN. where his brother David G., 17, and sister, Margaret H., 15, were also born.Their parents were James Edmiston, 52, a minister, born in Abbeville District, SC, and Jane M., 50, born in Pendleton, SC.Other children were: Mary Jane, 13, and Joseph M. 9, born in Putnam County, Indiana.

March, 1847.Mary Edmiston and Joseph Greer were married.He was son of Joseph Greer who was born in PA in 1754 and came to Tennessee in 1790 and Mary Harmon Greer.Joseph and Mary Edmiston Greer had one child, born Sept. 13, 1858.Mary died soon after childbirth. They had lived in Petersburg and Fayetteville.(History of Tennessee, by Goodspeed, 1886).
Joseph Greer, Sr.,settled on his “vast domain” on Cane Creek near Petersburg and was a gallant defender of Watauga Station in 1769.He was a hero of Kings Mountain and carried news of the victory to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia.He was six feet seven inches tall and dressed like an aristocratic Virginia gentleman.

Dec. 13, 1852.J.S. Edmiston married Margaret E. Harreld, daughter of Russell T. and Eliza Forsythe Harreld of Kentucky.Margaret was born Jan. 16, 1833.J.S. Edmiston was born in Washington County, VA, in 1815, of a large family.His parents were G.W.C. and Elizabeth Steward Edmiston, natives of Virginia. His father was born in 1785 and died in 1847.His mother was born in 1791 and died in 1839.J.S. Edmiston came to Tennessee with his parents in 1837. He was educated in local schools and about age 23 bought 140 acres near Swan Creek.Four years later he bought out the heirs of the family farm and lived there until 1886 on 400 acres of good improved land.He was a Democrat who opposed secession. His grandfather, William Edmiston of Virginia, was a Captain in the Revolution and had two brothers killed at Kings Mountain.
J.S. and Margaret Edmiston had seven children: William C., John H., Clara, Mary E., Catherine, Robert R., and Thomas S.The family were members of the old Presbyterian Church of Petersburg, TN.(History of Tennessee: Biographical Sketches of Giles, Lincoln, Franklin and Moore Counties, by Goodspeed, 1886).

Sept. 20, 1868.Campbell Franklin Edmiston died in Lincoln County and was buried atUnity Cemetery, Howell , TN.He was born Sept. 16, 1822, in the same county, and married Aug. 1, 1850, Martha Elizabeth Ann Buchanan.She was born Sept. 27, 1831, in Lincoln and died many years after Campbell, Jan. 9, 1897.Her grave is beside his.Campbell and Elizabeth grew up on adjoining farmsnear Blakeville and attended services together at Unity Presbyterian Church at Howell, with many other Scotch-Irish who migrated from Washington County, VA and from Kentucky. They farmed at Blakeville all their daysand had three children born there:
1.John Campbell Edmiston, b. May 24, 1851, and died Sept. 2, 1868, of congestive chill.
2.James Stewart (Toker) Edmiston, b. August 18, 1853, and died in 1929 (he farmed and served as Blakeville postmasterfrom August 7, 1894, to June 20, 1897.)
3.Sarah Elizabeth Edmiston, b. March 18, 1856, and died in Lincoln County, Jan. 7, 1926.She is buried at Old Orchard Church Cemetery, Petersburg, Lincoln County.She married James Polk Dwiggins.

Campbell Edmiston’s father was General William Campbell (GWC or Campbell) Edmiston who was born Nov. 18, 1785, Glade Springs, Washington County, VA.

1869.Obadiah Benge Edmondson, born March 31, 1813, moved his surviving family to Ellis County, Texas. His parents were William and Elizabeth Benge Edmondson.He married Bethia Lyne Colville, daughter of Nutty White and Young Colville of Warren County, March 18, 1841.Theyappear to have lived in Warren for a few years where Colville (Tobe) and Amanda Elizabeth were born.Obadiah worked as an overseer in Giles County in 1860, but the family might have lived in nearby Lincoln County.They had six children in 1860:Mary Catherine, Warner Elmore, Ann Colville, William Amzi.One son,Hugh McClung Edmondson, died young and was buried in the churchyard at First Presbyterian Church, Fayetteville.The Civil War years were difficult.Obadiah had a hotelwhere the family might have lived.When news of the Battle of Shiloh arrived,Colville (Tobe) enlisted in Peter Turney’s Regiment, CSA,in which Tobe’s cousin, Felix Grundy Buchanan, was a major.Tobe fought in the Battle of Seven Pines and was captured at Gettysburg with other Lincoln County men.He was imprisoned at Fort Delaware, wounded.He managed to escape, returned to duty and fought at Chickamauga. He was wounded again at Nance’s Mill in 1864 and was again captured.He was sentenced to be hanged as a spy.In the meantime, Obadiah was jailed at Tullahoma by the Federal command and accused of “giving aid and comfort to the enemy”, meaning giving food to Confederate soldiers, sons of his friends. His two older daughters, Lizzie and Kate, were imprisoned for refusing to ride escort for Union officers.Belle Edmondson, Obediah’s cousin, was a famous Confederate spy.Soon after Kate and Lizzie were released, the family home burned.Tobe’s plightcalled for action.Obediah and Bethia gatheredsignatures from Fayetteville citizens swearing to Tobe’s good character and petitioning for his release.White and Colville relatives lent their support. Armed with documents and a letter from Andrew Johnson (later President), Obediah and Bethia made adread-ful wartime trip to Washington.They were helped there by influential Tennesseans.Return J. Meigs, whose father and grandfather had a close association with the Benges, was instrumental in getting Bethia in to see President Lincoln.She saw him three times in three months. He told her Tobe would be pardoned, pending proof of his status as a soldier.This was provided by Major Felix Grundy Buchanan, then in command of the regiment.

Obediah and Bethia returned to their devastated home and Tobe came back in May, 1865. Bethia died by September, 1865, age 44, and was buried besideher son Hugh.Tobe commissioned a memorial window for her in the early 1900’s which is in the Fayetteville First Presbyterian Church.Obediah married a second wife in 1882, the widow Frances Lowe Brewer.He died in Texas at 89 years, Nov. 10, 1902.Only one of the children of Obediah and Bethia returned to Lincoln County.Tobe was there in 1905 for the Confederate Reunion and to visit his home and friends.At that time, only Ann and Elmore were still living.
All except Hugh lived and died in Ellis County where many descendants may be found today.Obediah was a well educated man, trained as a gentleman but an expert woodsman, too.He was very tall, with black hair, high cheekbones and piercing blue eyes.(See: HERITAGE OF LINCOLN COUNTY TENNESSEE).

MARSHALL COUNTY, TENNESSEE

May, 1837. Court minutes. Articles of agreement by distributors ofthe estateof John Wilks, deceased, were signed by William Wilks, John Wilks, Betty Moore, Jeremiah Holt, Morgan Fitzpatrick and Joseph G. Edmundson. Certain negroes and money from the estate would be divided by the commissioners named. Two minors under the guardianship of William and John Wilks, Malinda and Blackstone Bills, would receive shares. Joseph G. Edmondson and William G. Wilk received a negro male named Phillip valued at $800 and a proportionate share of money to equalize each share.
December, 1837. Court Minutes. Ordered by the court that Joseph G. Edmondson be appointed overseer of the road in room of John D. Calvat & that he have the former hands.
(Joseph Grissom Edmondson was a son of Philip Edmondson, Jr. of Halifax County, Viirginia, and had moved to Tennessee in the early 1820’s.Many of his family lived in Bedford County.

Robert Edmondson who had fought at Kings Mountain and Isabella Buchanan.Lt. Robert Edmondson was a son of William Edmiston who married Agnes Holmes and livedin Washington County, Virginia.The Civil War heroine, Belle Edmondson, was a daughter ofAndrew Jackson Edmondson.

Debbie Harrison of Lake Oswego Oregon wrote in 1994 to William Edmundson of EFAB about William Edmondson of Maury County, TN.She believed him to be a son of Bryant Edmondson of Onslow County.The Edmondson Bible to which she had access gave William of Maury’s birth date as Aug. 11, 1766. Bryant of Onslow died about 1770.The State Census of N.C., 1784-87, showed William of Onslow to be living alone, one white male 21-60.Debbie thinks William married soon and had several children of his first marriage: (1) Parnita, born March 14, 1788 who married Council Hudspeth in Maury County, Jan. 21, 1810, naming one son Bryant Hudspeth; (2) Rhody Edmondson, b. Oct. 5, 1789, married Davis Mays March 30, 1822, in Maury and died Oct. 13, 1825; (3) William P. Edmondson, b. Feb. 14, 1791. William is shown in the 1790 and 1800 censuses of Onslow. Debbie thinks William married Grace Edwards as his second wife, May 26, 1801, in Onslow, with Lemuel Doty, bondsman, and Nathaniel Loomis as witness.William Edmondson appears in Maury County, TN records about 1810 when James Doty shows up in the same area.The association of a Doty in TN and a Doty in Onslow Co., N.C., with William is suggestive. William witnessed a deed in Onslow in 1803 but is not shown in the 1810 Census there.He is shown in the 1850 Census of TN, age 84, living with son, Joseph B. Allen Edmondson, born about 1813 in Halifax County, VA, was apprenticed at age 8 and ran away from his bond as apprentice at 17.He married about 1828 to Polly Julian, daughter of Isaac Julian.Their first child, Sophronia Edmondson, was born in 1831.He was in Monroe County TNin 1830.He bought a cradle in Knox County TN at an estate auction in 1831.He moved on to Green County, Missouri, where he was living in 1860 with Polly and 6 children, and was in Boone County, Missouri, in 1870.Four children were born in Tennessee: Julian, Alfred, Adeline and??Three were born in Missouri.His son Philander had a son named Rufus whose son Rex Edmondson lived in Springfield, Missouri.

The tombstone of Polly Julian says she was born Aug. 12, 1810, and died August 27, 1889.

Robert Upton Edmondson was born April 15, 1879, in Montgomery County, son of William Henry Edmondson, b. March 21, 1836, in Virginia.His mother was Mary Josephine Foster.William and Mary had 12 children. He died Jan. 5, 1905. Robertmarried Mary Edna Caldwell and had five children who lived and three who died as infants. He died Nov. 6, 1950.
Their daughter Ruth Hawthorn Edmondson was born in 1912, and married _____Whitworth.

John Edmondson (February 14, 1806-September 28, 1887) lived near Jefferson, a post-village of Rutherford County, Tennessee, 20 miles southeast of Nashville, In1830, John married Amanda Randolph,a widow with two children, Peter and Sarah. John and Amanda had one daughter,Harriet Amanda, and six sons:
William W. Edmondson (July 22, 1831-December, 1864; Edwin Catesby Edmondson (December 4, 1833-1909), Robert Paine Edmondson (July 16, 1836-March 8, 1826), Thomas Pinkney Edmondson (April 22, 1838-1924), George Thompson Edmondson (June 16, 1840-1924), and David Wendell Edmondson, the youngest who was the only son not to serve in the Confederate Army. Edmondson was a tanner and farmer, owning a leather factory on his place. He was a member of Smyrna Presbyterian Church and served as Elder of the Church for 40 years.
He wrote many letters. The collection includes Civil War passes and a notebook written by Robert Paine Edmondson, the son shown in the 1850 Census.

John Edmondson, son of William ? Edmondson and Lucy Payne Waring of Essex County, Virginia, was born Feb. 14, 1806.His mother had considerable property left to her in Essex County by her father, Col. William Waring.Her husband died before she moved to Rutherford County, Tennessee, with their children. Warner Lewis and Henry Waring managed her property in Essex County as Trustees for her and the children. Their report for 1827-1829 was recorded with the court, Feb. 15, 1830.The estate included Whitepoint Plantation. Lucy’s grandfather was Francis Waring (Will dated 1770, Essex County), and her great-grandfather Colonel Thomas Warning.
John Edmondson had a brother, Catesby Edmondson, who is mentioned in a letter April 6, 1833, from John N. Craddock of Moulton, Alabama, to John in Rutherford County, TN.John Craddock was married to Lucy Edmondson, John Edmondson’s sister.Another brother, Thomas W. Edmondson, was living in Moulton at the same time and moved on to Holly Springs, MS, about 1835. Catesby Edmondson settled in Holly Springs before 1842, was married to Eliza who died in 1847. Catesby and Eliza had children. Catesby appears to have died by November, 1847, leaving only Thomas W. and John as surviving brothers.

William Edmundson of Essex County was probably the oldest son of William and Diana Edmondson, grandson of John and Catherine Dunn Edmondson, and great-grandson of James and Judith Parr Edmondson all of Essex County.Little information is available on him.Lucy and her nine children were well provided by her family after Wiliam’s death.Children:

The family of Andrew J. Edmondson of Pontotoc County, MS, moved to Shelby County just before the Civil War and lived on a farm on Holly Ford Road about three miles from the Mississippi border and 8 miles southeast of Memphis. Belle Edmondson, the famous Confederate smuggler and spy, was his daughter. She was born in Mississippi in 1840. The Edmondsons were staunch Confederates.Two of the sons were in the Confederate Army. The Edmondson farm was in no-man’s land when the war reached the Memphis area. Parties of scouts from both armies patrolled constantly. Confederate lines were about thirty miles south and Federal pickets covered the local roads. Belle Edmondson described in her diaries and letters her adept skill in smuggling information and supplies to Confederates. She carried letters and money in her bosom, and medicine and supplies under her petticoats.Returning from Memphis on one trip, she made a skirt of gray uniform cloth, pinned hats inside her hoops, tied boots under her skirts and counted on the fact that Union officers were reluctant to search women.Her many trips back and forth caught the attention of Union officials and General Stephen A. Hurlburt issued a warrant for her arrest.This ended her adventures. She moved in 1864 to a plantation in Clay County, Mississippi, and lived there until the war ended. Reuben Edmonston, son of Archibald, came to the area which became Weakley County in 1818.He returned to Christian County, Kentucky, told his father about land in Tennessee and came back with his brother-in-law John Bradshaw to raise a crop of corn and build a cabin on Mud Creek in 1819.Most of his family followed him in 1820. Robert Spilsby Edmondson and his wife Nancy Singleton Edmondson moved from Mecklenburg County, Virginia, about 1819-1820.Their son Richard Coleman Edmondson, was born in Williamson County, April 4, 1822, and died in Tishomingo County, MS, May 3, 1908. A second son, Samuel M. (or B.) Edmondson was born here in 1824, and died in 1878 (some say in Arkansas, some Tishomingo County, MS).Robert Spilsby Edmondson was son of Richard Coleman Edmondson, Sr. grandson of Thomas Edmondson and Grissell Coleman Edmondson, great-great-grandson of Benjamin and Margaret Upton Finley Edmondson, and great-great-grandson of Thomas Edmondson, the immigrant of Essex County, Virginia, who died in 1715.
